Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching employs a methodology of co-operative learning to facilitate the development of critical reasoning and analytical skills; development of these skills is intended, in turn, to foster in students resilience, independence, and a sense of shared enterprise.

Student Feedback

A teacher's journey never ends. If you are new to teaching, you're welcome to check out public reviews of my first courses to see what to expect:

And here is a selection of student comments from anonymous post-semester questionnaires:

"What I liked best was the interactive learning atmosphere."

"Dear Liam, your communication with the students was wonderful. I really appreciated that you listened to everyone attentively and answered sincerely. Your feedback was helpful. I also really liked that you were always ready for help and recommended us additional material about the course. Thank you so much, I wish you all the best!!!!"

"I liked how the course taught me how to rearrange arguments in the clearest and most concise form. I also liked how we did practices based on the reading, which helped me understand, especially with the parts I was confused with at first."

"Liam did an amazing job. I really liked his lectures on fallacies. He was always prepared for the lectures."

"Everything was clearly organized (on Moodle, the syllabus, the classes in general) and if there was confusion, it was almost immediately clarified. The instructors listened to the needs of students, took action accordingly (by extending deadlines, etc.) and were not afraid to admit mistakes, which made the atmosphere very amicable. Also, they were very helpful in advancing students' understanding of the topics and offered clarification about confusing concepts where necessary."

"More sessions from Liam would be nice."

"I enjoyed that I could try something new without being expected to be an expert in it already."

"Liam is a great TA."

"Amazing course. Was very useful and very clear for me as a person with no philosophical background in general. Was very useful for my PhD dissertation."

"Liam was great. Everything one could ask for out of a TA. Very smart, very thoughtful individual. I wish him all the best going forward and I hope to see him around campus."

"Great discussion sessions. Very informative."

"A really cool instructor. Would recommend class. Only wish the discussion section was longer."

"Graded work fairly and during discussion classes he was able to explain the concepts that were harder to understand. If a student did not understand a concept, he would take whatever time necessary to get the student to understand. Overall good professor."

"I liked the lectures by Liam, they were very interactive :)"
